OAS Mission requests that the popular will expressed in Guatemala be respected

July 4, 2023

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (MOE/OAS) has followed up on the public positions of the different political actors made after the conclusion of electoral day and underlines the importance of respecting the electoral results. expressed by the citizens last Sunday.

The OAS Mission, headed by former Paraguayan Foreign Minister Eladio Loizaga, reiterates that it observed a satisfactory electoral day in which the citizens expressed their will, the polling station members facilitated voting and the political parties supervised the day in each of its stages.

During its observation, the Mission verified that at least four of the political forces in contention had the presence of prosecutors in a high percentage of the Vote Receiving Boards, from their opening to their closing, including the counting.

The Mission reiterates, as it did in its preliminary report, that the data presented by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal coincides with the information collected in the field by its observers and with that compiled by those who made up the EOM.

The electoral technology specialists from the MOE observed that the official national system for the publication of preliminary results TREP operated with efficiency and solidity, correctly processing 99.18% of the records of the presidential election.

The OAS Mission has learned of cases of tally sheets with arithmetic errors that have been disseminated on social networks and has been able to verify that these tally sheets were processed in accordance with the procedures established in current legislation. These isolated cases do not reflect the generality of the electoral process and correspond to a very minor number of votes that is not decisive for the result of the election.

As established by the regulations, political forces have been able to present claims in a timely manner so that the authorities have the possibility to analyze them and proceed legally as appropriate.

It is important that all the actors in the democratic process behave responsibly and adhere to current regulations.

Respect for the will of the citizens expressed at the polls is a democratic imperative that must prevail, honoring what the voters have already decided last Sunday.
