Mobilizing Young People to Invest in Their Home Communities in Central America

March 22, 2022

Glasswing International today announced a $13.2 million grant from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation to pilot a youth service corps in Guatemala and Honduras to harness the power of young people to drive change and prosper in their own communities rather than migrate to the U.S. Inspired by the AmeriCorps program in the U.S., Glasswing’s Central American Youth Corps will enable young women and men, ages 15-22, to have a first job experience in local community organizations, public schools, clinics, environmental groups, municipalities, and other entities working to strengthen communities in Guatemala and Honduras.

Young people from Comitancillo in the department of San Marcos in Guatemala begin a new lesson plan in collaboration with local implementing partner Tierra Nueva.

Young people from the community of Cofradia carry out an intervention at a public school in the Cortes department of Honduras with the support of artist Denis Berrios in collaboration with local implementing partner FUNADEH (Fundación Nacional para el Desarrollo de Honduras).

Generating greater community rooting, developing leadership potential, and sowing awareness in youth are an essential part of this important initiative that is being implemented in Central America.
