EDITORIAL: Why did we think getting troops into Haiti would be easy?

February 2, 2024

The grand coalition of countries that was supposed to be assembling troops to go to Haiti has hit a snag. The main country, Kenya, who first pledged 1,000 troops, has been blocked by its high court because the court is essentially saying that President Ruto needs to do it in a legal and lawful way.

We thought that getting manpower into Haiti was this slam dunk. We just get a few hundred troops and send them here. We were wrong. Not only is Haiti a mess that has to be sorted out, finding out how to help and can we deliver on the help and aid that we do have is important, as we see with the Kenyan scenario.

Not only is the Kenyan court in the way, apparently, it will cost upward of $200m to send troops to Haiti. These things cost money, who would have thought? We see America sending troops all over the world and it looks really easy.

All of this even before we reach to Haiti to deal with the real problem. So we have problems to solve before we solve the problem. Life can become problematic at times, but we must not lose the will to do the right thing. The right thing is stabilizing Haiti at all cost. So the $200m is being provided by the US, thank God. Canada is also providing logistical support for troops entering into Haiti too, we thank them.

Haiti needs a new government. It needs to rid itself of the gangs. Haiti also needs to find a way to put its oligarchs in check and keep them out of political matters. Haiti needs peace!
