EDITORIAL: Reparations now, but no money to governments, please!

September 12, 2023

While the region prepares to make its formal request from the British Royal Family for their role in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, we hope that the effort is not wasted and usurped by politicians looking to score political points and hence the good efforts are wasted.

What we also do not want to happen is if money, in particular, is given to the Caribbean, may it not go to any individual government or earmarked for Caribbean governments in plural. If so it will be a grave mistake.

Not only because the money would disappear faster than a married John when the police raids the whorehouse, but because there are enough civil society organisations that are building the region with wholesome activities that the money/resources can go to.

Additionally, to empower, in many respects, our new overlords with even more money, resources and power, will only exacerbate the already deepening inequities between the haves and have nots. WE may as well be back under colonial slavery again because he many of us will never be able to get up from underneath that.

What we need is the development of our socio-economic institutions and programmes, even beyond the money, if we will get a dollar from the vast richness of the vestiges of the British Empire.

We support the call for reparations and for a formal apology from the British Royal Family. At least start with an apology if nothing else.
