EDITORIAL: Protecting our girls from predators

June 2, 2023

The Guyana/Mahdia blaze that killed 20 young girls all boils down to one teen girl who had a relationship with an older man. Things like sexting and even sexual relations can be set to the side for her, her hormones are doing what they are supposed to do. However, something must be said about the adult male who was preying on her and girls like her in that school.

Part of the reason why so many of the students in Mahdia died was because they were trapped inside due to the iron bars and locked doors and gates of the compound that were designed to keep undesirable predators out like him. So, so tragic it is.

This goes to show us that iron bars and gates are not enough to keep our young girls safe. They need education and understanding. Also we need to put more emphasis on the adult men that find ways to influence them into womanhood way before they are legally able to.

May this be an opportunity to look into the social dynamic of male/female relationships and find new ways to build safety rails and not necessarily iron barriers from one another. As we have seen, these iron barriers do not work at best and at worse they create more death and harm than the good they are constructed for.

Let us be truly vigilant of the lions that roam around looking to devour the sheep. People are going to have sex. Women are going to want to meet up with men, this is just human nature. How do we teach them to do things responsibly.
