EDITORIAL: Local investors always get the shaft when faced with wealthy foreign investors.

April 5, 2024

This is just the way it is. Local investors with small pockets have to have all of their ducks lined up in a row before they can claim victory on any of their dreams of investing in their country. Whether they are as far down as Guyana or up north to Bermuda, you better have your details in order.

What has been happening with the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and the Bahamian entrepreneur, Toby Smith, and their land dispute that is now headed to the highest court in the land in the Privy Council, could have been avoided.

The thing is this is normal. When you are spending $10 compared to someone willing to spend $1,000, you will become displaced. But there is no excuse for disregarding an agreement and the rule of law. This is why we have laws in the first place, for instances where money and power will crush the low and humble.

How will the Privy Council look at the matter is up to them. We believe in the rule of law and whatever their Lordships devise will be the law.
