EDITORIAL: Developed countries ain’t movin’ fast enough!

September 22, 2023

You heard the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, tell the developed countries that they are lagging their feet on issues critical to the developing world? We like that because, truth be told, they are dragging things on a bit when lives are on the line.

It’s been nearly two years now since she started her initial plea for a change to the international financial system and how it approached developing countries, but nothing much has happened. We noticed it. We wonder if it has something to do with the message coming from her, or does it have to do with their arrogance and being tone deaf towards approaching anything new and different?

We believe it is a bit of both because, how dare Ms Mottley tell us how to do our job in the first place? What does she know about the inner workings of the IMF and World Bank? We’re the experts, not Ms Mottley- take a seat, lady.

Truth be told too, it may also be a bit of ignorance as well. They may want to attempt what Ms Mottley is asking them, but they may not know how to go about doing it, or why they should and where they should go from here after her initial intervention? This seems to be more in lines of the capacity of human beings. LOL… Oftentimes they simply just don’t know what in the world is going on and too ashamed to look into it and ask?

So while the developed country and their support agencies try to catch up to Ms Mottley, let us encourage them to continue to look at the damage inflicted upon the coastal developing states like we have in the Caribbean and if that does not spur their intellectual juices to provide better financing options then they are in the wrong business, because the need is obvious and great.
