The chief executive of a regional recruitment service is lauding the government’s commitment to rolling out nearly 4,000 permanent positions within the country’s waste management industry, noting that it will improve the lives of workers.

Joseph Boll is CEO of Caribbean Employment Services Inc., a market-leading digital talent acquisition service that aims to connect the top talent from the Caribbean with hiring managers, HR professionals and decision-makers in companies both within the Caribbean as well as abroad.

He was commenting on Minister of Finance and the Public Service the Hon. Nigel Clarke’s announcement during the budget debate that 3,813 new permanent posts will be created within the National Solid Waste Management Authority, and that the many contract workers in those positions will become permanent.

“We would just like to acknowledge and applaud the Holness administration for making the move to improve the quality of life for all of these contract workers,” Boll said. “This will help them be able to access benefits and services that will improve their lives and help them provide a better lifestyle for their families.”

Boll also said he was pleased to see this commitment being made in an industry outside of tourism.

“We’ve noticed over the past few years how much this country’s government leaders have held true to the general objective in many Caribbean nations to sort of decentralize away from tourism after the pandemic,” he said. “We’ve seen attention being paid to other industries with programmes being launched, investment being made and so on and that should be acknowledged and commended.”

From a recruitment and retention perspective, the CEO noted that bringing more permanent jobs onstream is also a positive for the government itself as the nation’s largest employer.

“This will make the Government of Jamaica an even stronger, more reputable employer, and this category of jobs that much more competitive, especially for an industry that can face a lot of stigma, culturally,” Boll said. “Well done on showing commitment to the working people of Jamaica.”
