The general elections in St Vincent and the Grenadines are this Thursday. There is some significant controversy swirling around the reign of Ralph Gonsalves, the nation’s Prime Minister and leader of the incumbent party.
There are discussions being had about the dreaded Citizenship by Investment programme and primarily how SVG does not have one. This is by design by Gonsalves as he has balked at any idea of selling SVG passports and by extension their citizen’s birthright.
As such, CBI lobbyists are spending significant sums to remove him from power, sources from SVG tell us. We can confirm nor deny the amounts or where the money is being spent, just to know that these CBI proponents will profit significantly if Gonsalves is removed.
But, herein lies another wrinkle, the US does not approve of how the CBI has been used in other Caribbean jurisdictions. They have said that it is an open door to terrorists and unsavoury characters that wish to do America harm. However, they also want Gonsalves gone because of his stance with Venezuela and his position against US military build up in the region.
So, we will see which of the forces will play a dominant factor against Gonsalves on election day. These power players tend to forget the people of SVG have a say in all of this.
You simply cannot deny Gonsalves’s leadership over the last few terms in SVG.
