TONY PRESCOTT: KEEPING THE SWEETNESS OF OUR CULTURE ALIVE, ONE SONG AT A TIME

There is something particularly beautiful about individuals who continue to contribute to the cultural landscape of Trinidad and Tobago, not simply through what they do, but through the passion, consistency and genuine appreciation they bring to their craft.

Tony Prescott, affectionately known to many as Tony P, is one such individual.

As we look towards Carnival 2027, Tony is preparing to introduce audiences to his latest musical offering, Sweetness, produced by MadLypso. From the early impressions surrounding the song, there is something rather refreshing about this release. It embraces a smoother, more intimate groove, reminding us that Soca music does not always have to be about high-energy performances and jumping. Sometimes, it is about connection, companionship, romance and the simple pleasure of enjoying good music in good company.

What makes Tony’s musical journey particularly interesting is that his contribution to entertainment extends beyond the recording studio. He is also a familiar voice on WACK Radio 90.1FM, where he co-hosts the afternoon drive programme alongside Mr Desmond. This speaks to another dimension of his involvement in the industry: the importance of communication, personality and maintaining a relationship with audiences.

Many will also remember Tony for All Aboard, the memorable boat-ride anthem that has become associated with the enjoyment and social experiences that form part of our Carnival culture.

And perhaps this is where we ought to appreciate Tony’s contribution more deeply.

Our cultural ambassadors are not necessarily only those who occupy the biggest stages or receive the greatest recognition. They are also the individuals who consistently show up, contribute their talents, support the industry and help preserve the experiences that make our culture uniquely ours.

There is something to be said about longevity, too. To remain connected to an industry that constantly evolves requires an appreciation for change while retaining an understanding of what makes the culture meaningful.

With Sweetness, Tony is exploring another musical expression, and that willingness to embrace different sounds and moods is something worth encouraging.

It is also important to acknowledge the creative minds responsible for bringing this production together. The song was written by Kern Rose, produced by MadLypso, the collaborative production team of Johann Seaton and Kern Rose, and mixed and mastered by Madman Yohan. Every musical production represents the coming together of different talents, and that collaborative effort deserves recognition.

As a Trinidadian who appreciates the value of our creative industries, I believe we must become more intentional about supporting our artistes, producers, songwriters, musicians, broadcasters and everyone who contributes to the cultural economy.

Sometimes, we underestimate the significance of simply encouraging another person’s journey. A kind word, a share, a recommendation or taking the time to listen can make a meaningful difference.

Tony, I want to extend my warmest wishes to you as you prepare for Carnival 2027. May this new musical chapter bring fresh opportunities, greater visibility and continued fulfilment.

Keep doing what you do, keep embracing the music and, most importantly, keep contributing to a culture that gives so many of us a sense of identity, belonging and pride.

Because, beyond the rhythm, the melodies and the celebrations, our culture is ultimately about people.

And when people bring their passion, creativity and authenticity to what they do, that is a sweetness worth celebrating.
