We note with great interest the ECLAC report that indicates that poverty is declining. That’s good. Most of us don’t feel it, however because we don’t feel any richer.
GDP per capita growth, notwithstanding it is an inadequate measure of wealth, has been spotty over the past decade, to say the very least and has been over 5 percent regionwide just one time in the past 20 years, so says data from the World Bank.
But, poverty is declining, ECLAC notes. We need more money in our pocket. We should not be satisfied that fewer of us as in pervasive poverty.
Aside from Guyana, most other countries have no answer of how to grow their economies and create new wealth for its citizenry.
Our fight should continually be for economic empowerment. Continually fight for more power over the heights of our resources and economy.
It is not something that can be ignored anymore. The people must begin to find new ways to innovate and work around the systems foisted upon them that keep them back.
This will require people with the courage to do different things and be better.
We can do it.
