1 O Master, let me walk with thee
In lowly paths of service free;
Tell me thy secret, help me bear
The strain of toil, the fret of care.

By some clear, winning word of love;

And guide them in the homeward way.

Psalm 33:13 – 21
13 The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all humankind.

15 he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds.
16 A king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 The war horse is a vain hope for victory,

18 Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and shield.

A READING: Isaiah 2:10 – 17
10 Enter into the rock, and hide in the dust
from the terror of the Lord and from the glory of his majesty.
11 The haughty eyes of people shall be brought low,
and the pride of everyone shall be humbled,
and the Lord alone will be exalted on that day.
12 For the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty,
against all that is lifted up and high;
13 against all the cedars of Lebanon, lofty and lifted up;
and against all the oaks of Bashan;
14 against all the high mountains and against all the lofty hills;
15 against every high tower and against every fortified wall;
16 against all the ships of Tarshish
and against all the highly prized vessels.
17 The haughtiness of people shall be humbled,
and the pride of everyone shall be brought low,
and the Lord alone will be exalted on that day.

Our Collect puts its finger on an issue that remains a vexation to the Lord in all generations. Time and again, through the voice of his prophets, he issues judgment against the proud and arrogant. Although we are made in His image and likeness, we cannot approach his wisdom, nor exercise his power. To the One who created all, pride is an abomination, for there is no foundation to it. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and end, of all we know. Gratitude and humility is what is appropriate for us

THE PRAYERS:
The Lord be with you
And also with you.
V. Show us your mercy, O Lord;
R. And grant us your salvation.
V. Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
R. Let your people sing with joy.
V. Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
R. For only in you can we live in safety.
V. Lord, keep this nation under your care;
R. And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
V. Let your way be known upon earth;
R. Your saving health among all nations.
V. Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
R. Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
V. Create in us clean hearts, O God;
R. And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Be with us, Lord in all our prayers, and direct our way towards the attainment of salvation; that among the changes and chances of this mortal life, we may always be defended by your gracious help.
Kindle in every heart, we pray, the true love of peace, and guide with your wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
And now, as our Saviour has taught us, let us pray
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
