CEO calls for more support for informal workers to take advantage of digital economy

With the digital economy being identified as an industry that could help to address a growing problem of high instances of job informality, Caribbean Employment Services Inc. is hoping to see more initiatives designed to see this through.

Caribbean Employment Services Inc. is a market-leading digital talent acquisition service that aims to connect the top talent from the Caribbean with hiring managers, HR professionals and decision-makers in companies both in the Caribbean and abroad.

Just recently, a Barbadian finance minister suggested that more digitalization could potentially help to address job informality in the country, as he called for more residents to embrace technology and prepare themselves to undergo lifelong learning to keep up with continuous advancements. Those comments were made after reports from organizations like the World Bank, International Labour Organization (ILO), United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and others have issued calls for regional governing bodies to take urgent action to address the high rates of job informality that have dramatically increased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Caribbean Employment Services Inc. supports the suggestion that digitalization could improve job informality, as it could help Caribbean jobseekers, entrepreneurs and workers access job opportunities they may not have otherwise been able to easily access, and tap into more markets than they can readily access from their own home countries. It could even help people currently working in the informal sector to acquire gainful employment working remotely for an international company while still living in and economically contributing to their own home country.

However, if this is to be accomplished, efforts must be made to improve digital literacy and access to stable, affordable internet as well as the necessary equipment to work properly in the digital economy.

“It’s a great idea in theory, but, realistically, people need support to be able to properly leverage the benefits of the digital economy,” says Joseph Boll, Caribbean Employment Services Inc. CEO. “As a fully digital operation ourselves, we support the benefits of the digital economy and know that Caribbean people can also benefit from it, and we hope to see more support from governments and organizations alike to help make that happen.”
