A DEVOTION

MAY 26,  2026

But the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.                                                                                                John 14:26

            CPWI  241    Thou, Whose Almighty Word

1. Thou, whose almighty Word

chaos and darkness heard,

and took their flight;

hear us, we humbly pray,

and, where the gospel day

sheds not its glorious ray,

let there be light!

2. Thou who didst come to bring

on Thy redeeming wing

healing and sight,

health to the sick in mind,

sight to the inly blind,

O now to all mankind

let there be light!

3. Spirit of truth and love,

life-giving, holy Dove,

speed forth Thy flight!

Move on the waters’ face

bearing the lamp of grace,

and in earth’s darkest place

let there be light!

4 Holy and blessed Three,

glorious Trinity,

Wisdom, Love, Might;

boundless as ocean’s tide,

rolling in fullest pride,

through the world far and wide,

let there be light!

Blessed be the Lord our God

By whose grace we are yet alive.

Blessed be His Son Jesus Christ

By whose rising we are set free.

Blessed be the Spirit of God

In whom is our hope and our joy.

O God our Father, you have bidden light to shine out of darkness,

and have awakened us again to praise your goodness and to seek

your grace; make us children of the light and of the day, that our

lives being open to your glory, we may shine as lights in the world,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

                                    Psalm 34:1-3,  15- 22

1 I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually

be in my mouth.

2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord;

let the humble hear and be glad.

3 O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

and his ears are open to their cry.

16 The face of the Lord is against evildoers,

to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears

and rescues them from all their troubles.

18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,

but the Lord rescues them from them all.

20 He keeps all their bones; not one of them will be broken.

21 Evil brings death to the wicked,

and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.

22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;

none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

            A READING:              ACTS 3:1 – 10

3 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, at three o’clock in the afternoon. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried in. People would lay him daily at the gate of the temple called the Beautiful Gate so that he could ask for alms from those entering the temple. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked them for alms. 4 Peter looked intently at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 Peter said, “I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,[a] stand up and walk.” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 Jumping up, he stood and began to walk, and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 All the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and they recognized him as the one who used to sit and ask for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with wonder and astonishment at what had happened to him.

            The Word of the Lord.               Thanks be to GOD.

[…O God, who at Pentecost taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit

The power displayed at Pentecost remained active after the great day! The citizens of Jerusalem saw the power, heard the ‘Good News’ even as the  apostles carried on with their lives. Today’s story captures a moment of healing for one man. The story will continue  with people deliberately laying their sick on the path where the apostles walked, and their faith was rewarded with healing of their loved ones. Has the power of yesterday’s celebration faded from your life already? Is there still room for the Holy Spirit to do some amazing work with you, or within you?  We sincerely hope so. More convincing than anything we say, (or do) is the discerned presence of God where we are…

 O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry…]

  THE PRAYERS:

V. Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance;

R. Govern and uphold them, now and always.

V. Day by day we bless you;

R. We praise your Name for ever.

V. Lord, keep us from all sin today;

R. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

V. Lord, show us your love and mercy;

R. For we put our trust in you.

V. In you, Lord, is our hope;

R. And we shall never hope in vain.

COLLECT:                               PENTECOST

O God, who at Pentecost taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.    Amen.

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and challenges of the day, we may not forget you. Grant that within the boundaries set for us, we may find mutual benefit and true fellowship, and that as we act sensibly and sensitively one with another, we may experience full health and wholeness as you intend; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

              And now, as our Saviour has taught us, let us pray

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours now and for ever.            Amen.

            Anointing, fall on me, Anointing, set me free,

            Let the power Of the Holy Ghost, fall on me;

            Anointing, set me free.

The Dismissal:

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.                            Romans 15:13

The Lord be with you

And also with you.

Let us bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God.
