EDITORIAL: Cocaine in Bahamian sharks

March 31, 2026

What a shame it is that there are sharks in Bahamian waters that are testing positive for illicit substances like cocaine.

The report from the journal Environmental Pollution also said that the sharks are also testing positive for caffeine.

While the cocaine can be explained due to the drug trafficking through Bahamian waters and traffickers dumping their cargo before being intercepted by authorities. The caffeine angle is a little strange and leads to questions about who would dump caffeine into the ocean in such quantities that sharks are testing positive for traces of caffeine?

The notion is that the caffeine can be linked to human waste and sewage being dumped into the ocean. This just underscores how much coffee and caffeine based products are being consumed in the country.

This is the strange part about the pollution issue for The Bahamas in that we not only have standard pollution from waste, but also deliberate pollution from criminals dumping contaminants in the ocean.

What can we do? These are the questions.
