EDITORIAL: Power shift in Panama a corollary to Venezuela

February 6, 2026

The Trump administration is setting rights to the slackness in the Latin American and Caribbean region. This surge in American focus in the region has not been seen since the height of the Cold War.

Not many will like the increase in activity, but it is the price of geopolitics with China and Russia. We have become a liability to US interests and it is not sitting well with the Trump faction, who were already a little ticked off with the way China and the European Union have surpassed the US in many regard with regard to their economic clout.

What will most likely happen now is governmental shifts throughout the region with regard to elections. There will be surprising candidates with even more surprising results.

What we do not hope for it more military intervention as we saw in Venezuela or massive homegrown protests exacerbated by external influences just to remove political actors. You really do not want the latter.

Let us pray that our leaders find the right strategy and thinking in dealing with this latest iteration of American foreign policy, because it cannot be easy trying to interpret and discern the way the winds will blow.
