The answer to the title of this editorial is much more difficult. Russia’s emergence into the region as an assist to Venezuela means no one trapped in this conflict any good.
Not only do they not have a stake in the Caribbean. It is not their home turf like eastern Europe is. They can assist with creating more confusion and conflict and have no ill effects of it.
If Russia is sending military grade equipment, inclusive of surveillance gear, would make the ante irresistible for the US not to counter.
This is where all of the creepy things will start to happen to Caribbean countries who try to dance with the devil. The best option is to give no leeway for either side to use your facilities, front channel or back channel, to facilitate anything with regard to Venezuela. But, if push comes to shove, and you are already neck deep, take the safe bet. Get out of any arrangement and seek consultations with the United Kingdom, who will most likely advise you to side with the US. Siding with the US was what Caribbean countries should have been doing before it got this bad.
You don’t have to be as divisive as Trinidad Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar. Just ensure that the US has your best attention.
Be safe out there. People’s lives are in your hand.
