Russia’s foreign ministry denounced on Saturday “excessive military force” by the United States in the Caribbean Sea deployed as part of a drive against drug trafficking and reaffirmed its support for Venezuela’s leaders.
“We firmly denounce the use of excessive military force in carrying out actions in anti-drugs operations,” foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a commentary on her ministry’s website.
Alexei Zhuravlyov, the First Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on Defense, stated that he does not rule out supplying Oreshnik ballistic missiles to Venezuela.
He claimed this in a comment to the Russian propaganda outlet Gazeta.Ru.
Zhuravlyov admitted that Russia continues to supply weapons to Caracas amid escalating tensions between Venezuela and the United States.
Dmitry PEskov, Kremlin spokesperson, told reporters that both countries have been in close working contact and it is Russia’s hope that tensions between the US and Venezuela remains calm.
