LETTER: Tribute to a Statesman: Bonaire Honors Legacy of Chandrikapersad Santokhi former president of Suriname

April 3, 2026

We are deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of Chandrikapersad Santokhi, former President of Suriname. On behalf of the people of Bonaire and the Bonaire Human Rights Organization, we extend our deepest condolences to the Government and people of Suriname, as well as to his family and loved ones.

We had the honor of first meeting this distinguished statesman in 2018 in Paramaribo during his tenure as an opposition leader, and again in 2022 in Paramaribo, when he served as President of Suriname and Chair of CARICOM during the 43rd Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government, where he received us with warmth and gave thoughtful attention to the case of Bonaire. We also recall our engagement during the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in 2025 in Bridgetown, reflecting his continued commitment to regional dialogue and solidarity.

President Santokhi will be remembered for his dedicated service, his strengthening of democratic governance, and his steadfast commitment to the rights and dignity of the people of Suriname.

In this time of profound loss, we stand in solidarity with the Government and people of Suriname, as well as with his family and loved ones.
