EDITORIAL: We’re just creeping along

How can Latin America and the Caribbean spur more growth? Can we? Developed countries always say that the region is “behind,” and I always ask  behind compared to what in particular?

They never stop to think some of the things that America and Europe enjoy, we don’t want anything to do with it. Who wants locomotive trains running through their beautiful tropical environs? Who wants large manufacturing plants that emit gases and CO2 by the tonnes? The Caribbean doesn’t want it.

So when we talk about “growth,” and the region lagging behind, we have to take all of this into consideration. Some of us love the peaceful, slow pace of how we do business. Things get done more deliberately, which also may be wrong, but it gets done with a purpose.

Now, what the region needs is more intellect working on the ground. That’s what is truly lacking. Also, it needs a commitment to meritocracy, but that comes with leadership.

But to say the region is lagging behind of any country in the world is just propaganda to make Europeans feel superior to everyone else. Frankly, I would take our problems over their problems any given day.
