EDITORIAL: Technology is the way out for the region!

March 29, 2022

The US Virgin Islands is doing it right. They are embracing technology with their upcoming business attraction summit. They have built the backbone for the technology revolution which should serve as a template for other Caribbean countries.

Sure, the USVI is an American territory, which makes things easier for them having access to American investors, but Caribbean countries should not sell themselves short because there are advantages that they have that US, UK, French and Dutch protectorates don’t have.

For example, we are independent countries and we can make the rules as we see fit. There is no larger government agency looking to put the hammer down on business the way it would happen in the protectorates.

Secondly, we are virgin territory and it can be shaped and moulded the way an entrepreneurial artist would like if they have the time, money and love for the people.

Thirdly, you can reach out to your garden variety politician on any given morning. Most of them aren’t stuck up beyond approach, despite maybe at times being drenched in their disdain for foreigners at times. But this is only for the masses, put a few dollars in their pocket and they would sing at your birthday party. Caveat: Don’t overdo it, now. Don’t let the “support” let you believe you can talk to the locals in any fashion you like, because these politicians switch up on you if they believe they are losing the psychological grip on the masses.

Lastly, come with a workable idea that makes sense that everyone can see and take part in. Most of the time the locals only want to set up some half-assed little restaurant outside of the development, but it means something to them. Others ask for donations for the charity of the day, but this is what you should be doing in any event.
