EDITORIAL: Is Trinidad still capable of managing its oil resources?

June 16, 2026

There is one too many spills coming out of Trinidad and Tobago, the latest is the claims made by Venezuela that Trinidadian oil is spilling into their waters.

This is the second time in the last three years that a major oil spill has affected the region that emanated from Trinidad.

There was also the oil spill from the barge Gulfstream, which ran aground off Tobago in February 2024. This caused great fear to people in Grenada and St Vincent and the Grenadines.  The International Oil Pollution Compensation (IOPC) Fund disbursed TT$43,974,688 in compensation to local entities in Tobago where most of the damage happened as of December 31, 2025. We wonder if Venezuela will be compensated?

Trinidad needs to tighten up on its oil sector. They must remember that this is a specialized sector even though they may be used to it as commonplace.

We hope it comes under control for the sake of the environment.
