We take note of the recent commentary by Sir Ronald Sanders and his analysis of the Caribbean Court of Justice.
Sir Ronald opines that the CCJ is quiet when serious questions arise about its administration. No doubt making note of the court’s internal leadership and governance controversy sparked by a disagreement over a judicial dress code that escalated into leaked private correspondence and allegations of panel-fixing.
While this is an issue, the Antigua courts too, has their own scandal brewing that needed to be addressed equally as that of the CCJ.
Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne faced sharp backlash earlier this month after making public remarks criticizing a local judge for a lenient sentence, drawing formal concern from the Commonwealth Lawyers Association and the Antigua and Barbuda Bar Association over judicial independence.
Perhaps Sir Ronald should convene a meeting with Prime Minister Browne and the blatant threat to a sitting judge, which is very startling.
While it is easy to take aim at people not in our dominion, we should also be mindful to be fair and equitable when giving our opinions. We must be measured and remember that any one at any institution can become challenged in their capacity.
We must always be in a position to give wise counsel.
