EDITORIAL: Dominican Republic’s controversial presidential elections

May 14, 2024

Abortion is a controversial enough topic on any given day, but it has crept up into the Dominican Republic’s presidential elections this time around. The Church has made their position clear on the fact that they will stand with the candidate who is anti-abortion. The thing is, no candidate has said they are for or against abortion. So the Church is stirring up trouble, but on who’s behalf are they doing this? This is where it may get really interesting. And why are they injecting abortion into the DR’s presidential election? Strange things, indeed.

So we have abortion on one side, then we have the racist xenophobia of the anti-Haitian sentiment in the DR. To say this is a hot-button issue is an understatement. At least one candidate has come out and stopped short of saying to hell with the Haitians and their crisis. LOL… At least it is tasteful. But no doubt, how the incoming president of the DR will deal with the Haitian crisis is going to be something they will have to address, sooner or later.

All in all, at least no violence has been seen in the election run up. This is great news for a simmering Latin America that has seen its fair share of political violence in the last three years.

We wish the DR all the best this coming Sunday. Whomever wins, heavy is the head that will wear the crown.
