COMMENTARY: Navigating Eviction Threats and Legal Challenges Amidst Financial Struggles

I appreciate the support from everyone who has reached out. Currently, I’m facing a challenging situation where I’ve been served a notice to appear in court regarding payments for my HDC unit. At this point, I have less than eight weeks before facing eviction. I am a student at the University of the West Indies Global Campus, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago, and I also manage my own business.

Despite discussing my situation and requesting a payment plan, it was not granted, and the case has now been finalized. I am on the verge of being evicted, with my property set to be seized in a few weeks. The financial strain began with the impact of Covid-19 and my termination from the Visa Application Centre in 2017, which severely depleted my finances.

I tried requesting help from government officials, including Adrian Leonce and Camille Robinson-Regis, and no positive feedback was given and I am currently attempting to schedule a meeting with my MP, Brian Manning. Unfortunately, the government ministers have been unable to intervene, and now I am at the point of facing eviction. Despite numerous visits to legal aid, I was told I do not qualify for assistance. Without funds to hire an attorney, I ended up losing my case, and now my attorney is seeking intervention, costing me thousands of dollars that I cannot afford.

I am pleading once again for the government to step in and address this matter. The financial and legal challenges have taken a toll on my mental health, leading to unstable emotions and even suicidal thoughts last night.
