The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) under the leadership of Dickon Mitchell, won Thursday’s general elections, according to preliminary results released.

The NDC has been declared victor in nine of the 15 seats with the remainder going to the New National Party (NNP) of outgoing Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell.

The NDC leader, Dickon Mitchell, 44, who took over the opposition party in October last year, blew away Foreign Affairs Minister Oliver Joseph by a margin of 4,414 to 2,742 votes to win the St. David constituency.

Several other cabinet ministers lost their seats in Thursday’s election, including, Finance Minister Gregory Bowen, the Minister of Legal Affairs, Kindra Mathurin-Stewart, the Minister with responsibility for Forestry and Fisheries, Alvin Da Breo as well as the Minister for Infrastructure Development, Nolan Cox, and  Pamela Moses, the Minister for Information and Communications Technology.

Dr Mitchell, who is 75 years of age, held his St George North seat and will most likely become the leader of the Opposition if he decides to stay on. Dr Mitchell has led the Spice Island for over 20 years non-consecutively, only having lost one election since first coming to power in 1995, losing in 2008 to only win again in 2013 by a landslide and on to win a consecutive landslide in 2018.

Dickon Mitchell now has to bring together an NDC party that had fallen face first in 2013 and lost consecutive landslides and rebuild them into a political entity that can govern Grenada during these turbulent times as COVID-19 is still fresh on the minds of people everywhere.
