Senior Reporter with the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), Garfield L. Angus, has hailed the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) for its contribution to strengthening Caribbean media and uniting media professionals across the region.

Mr. Angus was speaking at the 57th CBU General Assembly and Media Awards, being held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre in Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, Guyana, today, (August 19), where he expressed gratitude to the Union for what he described as a “refreshing, enriching and inspiring” gathering.

He said the Assembly provided an important opportunity for media professionals to share ideas, strengthen partnerships, examine the future of the industry and reflect on the responsibility of Caribbean media practitioners. He also extended appreciation to the Guyanese hosts for their hospitality, describing the experience as “first-class” and one that would be remembered for many years.

Mr. Angus said the Assembly and Media Awards had empowered and inspired delegates to renew their commitment to being “change-makers and builders” of the Caribbean, guided by truth, fairness, accuracy and professional integrity. He encouraged media professionals to make wise use of technology and artificial intelligence, not only to improve their craft, but also to better serve Caribbean people and contribute to the development of the region.

As a gesture of appreciation, Mr. Angus presented the CBU President with a framed copy of his poem, “Voices of the Islands: The CBU.” He said the poem was a humble tribute to the Union, which since its establishment in 1970 has brought Caribbean media voices together, strengthened professional capacity, celebrated excellence and helped to tell the Caribbean story to audiences at home and internationally.

The poem highlights the CBU’s role as a collective voice for the region, connecting member territories and serving millions through television, radio, print and digital platforms. It also recognises the organisation’s contribution to press freedom, media excellence, professional development and the dissemination of reliable information, particularly during disasters and other times of crisis. Its closing stanzas look towards the future of Caribbean media, including the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence.

Mr. Angus said the presentation also celebrated the CBU’s tradition of recognising journalists, broadcasters and other media professionals whose work continues to enrich the Caribbean media landscape. The CBU has described its Annual General Assembly as the Caribbean’s premier gathering of media professionals, with this year’s nominees representing outstanding reporting, storytelling, production and creative content from across the region. “Thank you, and long live the Caribbean Broadcasting Union,” Mr. Angus said.
