A MORNING DEVOTION

April  30,  2026                                                          YEAR 7:DAY 051

Christ came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.                                 Ephesians 2:17, 18

CPWI 359         Ye That Know the Lord Is Gracious…

1  Ye that know the Lord is gracious,

 ye for whom a cornerstone

stands, of God elect and precious,

laid that ye may build thereon,

see that on that sure foundation

 ye a living temple raise,

towers that may tell forth salvation,

 walls that may re-echo praise.

2 Living stones, by God appointed,

each to his allotted place,

kings and priests, by God anointed,

shall ye not declare his grace?

 Ye, a royal generation,

tell the tidings of your birth,

 tidings of a new creation

to an old and weary earth.

3  Tell the praise of him who called you

                         out of darkness into light,

broke the fetters that enthralled you,

gave you freedom, peace and sight:

tell the tale of sins forgiven,

                         strength renewed and hope restored,

till the earth, in tune with heaven,

                        praise and magnify the Lord.

Hear us O Lord.

For your mercy is great.

We will exalt you, O God  our Saviour.

And praise your name for ever and ever.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit

As it was in the beginning is now;  and shall be forever. Amen.

Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for the rest of the past night, and for this new day. We praise you for who you are, ever loving, ever faithful, forgiving us our sins and renewing us in your grace and mercy. Strengthened by your Holy Spirit, grant that we may continue in your love and service; Through Jesus Christ our risen Lord.       Amen.

PSALM:                       78:18 – 25

1 Hallelujah!

Praise God in his holy temple; *

praise him in the firmament of his power.

2 Praise him for his mighty acts; *

praise him for his excellent greatness.

3 Praise him with the blast of the ram’s-horn; *

praise him with lyre and harp.

4 Praise him with timbrel and dance; *

praise him with strings and pipe.

5 Praise him with resounding cymbals; *

praise him with loud-clanging cymbals.

6 Let everything that has breath *

praise the Lord. Hallelujah!

            A READING:               1 Peter 2:4-9

4 Come to Christ Jesus, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and 5 like living stones let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in scripture:

“See, I am laying in Zion a stone,

            a cornerstone chosen and precious,

and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

7 This honor, then, is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected

has become the very head of the corner,”

8 and

“A stone that makes them stumble

and a rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

The Word of the Lord.               Thanks be to GOD.

[…Grant that all may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith;…

St Peter invites us into a living relationship with Christ Jesus our Lord, who is precious in God’s sight, and therefore a worthy sacrifice for our salvation. He opens up for us an eternal service as priests in the kingdom of God, called and anointed for service. He reminds us that we are chosen, special, for the proclamation of the Gospel of Our Saviour Jesus Christ.   We are not ‘lucky’.  We are chosen and blessed!

…You are a chosen people… God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light…]

                                     THE PRAYERS:

The Lord be with you

And also with you.

And now, as our Saviour has taught us, let us pray

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours now and for ever.            Amen.

V. Lord reveal your love among us

R. That we may know the joy of your salvation

V. Grant peace within and among all nations;

R. And teach our leaders wisdom

V. Endow your church with faithfulness

R. And her Servants with knowledge and true godliness

V. Defend, O Lord, the rights of the poor and the oppressed

R. That your justice may be known among all people.

V. Lord, renew your Spirit within us

R. That in us and through us your will be done

COLLECT

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ’s Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.   Amen.

Grant, Lord, that we may be faithful to you without turning aside, worship you without growing weary, serve you without failing; diligently seek you, happily find you, and forever possess you, the one and only God, blessed, for ever and ever.       Amen.

Closer than a brother, my Jesus is to me

He’s my dearest friend in every thing I need

He’s my rock, My shield and hiding place

Closer than a brother, Jesus is to me.

The Dismissal:

Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.  Ephesians 3:20, 21

The Lord be with you

And also with you.

Let us bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God.
