A MORNING DEVOTION

September 30,  2026                                                    YEAR 7: DAY 202

Since we have a great high priest who has passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us with confidence draw near to the throne of grace.                                                                          Hebrews 4:14-16

            CPWI   005       New Every Morning…

1 New every morning is the love

our wakening and uprising prove;

through sleep and darkness safely brought,

restored to life and power and thought.

2 New mercies, each returning day,

hover around us while we pray;

new perils past, new sins forgiven,

new thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.

3 If on our daily course our mind

be set to hallow all we find,

new treasures still, of countless price,

God will provide for sacrifice.

4 The trivial round, the common task,

will furnish all we need to ask,

room to deny ourselves, a road

to bring us daily nearer God.

5 Only, O Lord, in thy dear love

fit us for perfect rest above;

and help us, this and every day,

to live more nearly as we pray.

Hear us O Lord.

For your mercy is great.

We will exalt you, O God  our Saviour.

And praise your name for ever and ever.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit

As it was in the beginning is now;  and ever shall be forever. Amen.

Father, we come together in the Name of your Son Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, to offer you our worship, praise and thanksgiving. To you belong all power and glory. You are the source of all goodness. Let our worship bear witness to your peace and saving power. Through your Spirit may we ever rejoice in the abiding presence of our risen and ascended Lord.    Amen.

PSALM  40:6 – 13

6 Sacrifice and offering you do not desire,

but you have given me an open ear.

Burnt-offering and sin-offering you have not required.

7 Then I said, ‘Here I am; in the scroll of the book it is written of me.

8 I delight to do your will, O my God;     your law is within my heart.’

9 I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation;

see, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord.

10 I have not hidden your saving help within my heart, I have spoken

of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.

11 Do not, O Lord, withhold your mercy from me;

let your steadfast love and your faithfulness keep me safe for ever.

12 For evils have encompassed me without number;

my iniquities have overtaken me, until I cannot see;

they are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me.

13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; O Lord, make haste to help me.         GLORIA

14 What then are we to say? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! 15 For he says to Moses,

            ‘I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,

            and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.’

16 So it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God who shows mercy. 17 For the scripture says to Pharaoh, ‘I have raised you up for the very purpose of showing my power in you, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.’ 18 So then he has mercy on whomsoever he chooses, and he hardens the heart of whomsoever he chooses.

The Word of the Lord.               Thanks be to GOD.

[…O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing

mercy and pity…

That GOD is merciful is never in dispute. Discerning his reasons and choices though,  are incredibly difficult at times.  So many of us have seen His grace poured on someone. and have been forced to wonder why.  What did they do to deserve the blessing they have received? God doesn’t always answer questions like these directly. It is often in close observation of a context, that we begin to understand, to see,  the how and why of his actions. We come eventually to see that God is more sensitive and more forgiving and more patient than we give him credit for. ***

The Lord is good,

His loving mercy is forever: His faithfulness throughout all generations.]

THE PRAYERS:

The Lord be with you

And also with you.

                        As our Saviour has taught us, let us pray

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours now and for ever.      Amen.

COLLECT                                PROPER 21

O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.       Amen.

Be with us, Lord in all our prayers, and direct our way towards the attainment of salvation; that among the changes and chances of this mortal life, we may always be defended by your gracious help.

Kindle in every heart, we pray, the true love of peace, and guide with your wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord,   Amen.

            O most Merciful,  O most bountiful

            GOD the Father, Almighty

            By the Redeemer’s sweet intercession

            hear us, help us, when we cry.

THE DISMISSAL:

The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the eternal cove-nant, make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight; to Him be the glory forever. Amen.

The Lord be with you

And also with you.

Let us bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God
