EDITORIAL: Cuba is opening up, Caribbean be worried

September 4, 2026

Cuba is making considerable steps towards opening up and moving away from Communism, Caribbean countries that depend on investment and tourism should be concerned.

The thought of Cuba opening up would suck all of the foreign direct investment dollars to the pristine landscape and all of the potential interest would flow to Cuba.

It’s even more than tourist dollars because that would be evident. Who would want to come to Jamaica or The Bahamas when they can go to the historic Cuba and see the mountains that Castro came down out of and see old Havana and get a cigar?

This is going to be very important now that Cuba has decided to allow investment from Americans into the island to open up businesses. I give the old Cuban regime that is barely holding on to totally crumble now that investment is flowing into the country from citizens living abroad. There is only so much of that can Cubans living on the island be able to take without wanting more.

The Caribbean should be very concerned and up their tourism marketing game as much as they should be measured and particularly welcoming to foreign direct investment ideas now before it all dries up and decides to go to Cuba.
