In Grenada, Tourism is a main form of revenue, yet the lack of proper sanitation and restrooms facilities at prominent tourist areas, such as Lakes and beaches is a well documented crisis.
While Tourism serves as a major source of revenue, basic infrastructure deficits and weak resources allocation are forcing both locals and visitors to resort to the bushes.
Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, defecating and the absence of decent toilets are severe public health hazards that contaminates Waterways, degrade the dignity of the local citizens and compromise the marine ecosystems, endangering people’s lives, jeopardizing the lives of security personnel, working at locations, such as the Grand Etang Lake, where both male and female have to make use of the nearby bushes to relief themselves.
The citizens of Grenada are urgently calling on the government to immediately address this shameful reality that requires targeted intervention to fix this situation.
Human waste left in the bushes, or entering water systems, creates breeding grounds for water borne illnesses. Inadequate facilities or non existent facilities can deter visitors and harm the long-term sustainability of the travel industry.
Presently, there’s
a defecation crisis in some of our national landmarks.
Tourists are defeating in full view of the lake and they are not alone.
Let this serve as a reality check for the government of Dickon Mitchell, who acts as if all is well.
Tourists and visitors who come to our shores are not used to such conditions. Your government is jeopardizing their lives.
They expect clean working facilities. A lack of infrastructure hurts the country reputation. Open areas need proper waste management to keep everyone safe and healthy.
We must emphasize the negative impact this is having on Tourism and public hygiene, and the wide gap between Dickon Mitchell promises of “transformation ” and basic infrastructure needs.
The lack of adequate restrooms at the area is leading to frustration among the locals, visitors and employees.
In reality, every tourist facility is supposed to ensure the locations are equipped with working toilets and running water.
But in some places, none can be found, because the political will is lacking.
We need to potty-train the government of Dickon Mitchell. His government must invest in sanitation, provide the finances where it is needed and do the right thing, so that open defecation is permanently eradicated.
Grenada is steeped in a culture of natural beauty and culture. Lake Antoine is facing a total lack of basic facilities.
There’s an easy but simply solution , the government can erect a combined facility that will provide both a private restroom for Security Staff and public stalls for visitors, powered entirely by Solar panels.
For a country that has achieved fifty two years of independence, it is shameful, distasteful, disgraceful, embarrassing and unthinkable that the greatest danger to the health of Grenadians is self-inflicted. This is not “Transformation ” Dickon Mitchell.
The citizens of St.Patricks and surrounding areas are calling on the Tourism Authority, the Ministry of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism, The Public Worker Union to get their acts together and fix the devastating problem affecting them.
The Grenada Public Workers Union can intervene to demand portable toilets or running water stations for their members.
The lack of amenities directly impacts the working conditions of government contracted Security Staff.
This and other historical sites have grown frustrated by this reckless situation.
On-site males and females Security Staff without a private dignified place to relieve themselves during their shifts is a major failure in basic labor conditions and public facilities management.
While the Grenada Tourism Authority markets the Crater Lake as a top Ecotourism destination, for Birdwatching, infrastructure has failed to keep pace with these promotionally effort.
Citizens are bearing the brunt of the government neglect.
