MORNING DEVOTION

July 09, 2026                                                 YEAR 7: DAY 121

God’s love has been shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Spirit he has given us.                                                                      Romans 5:5

CPWI 293         Spirit Of God, Descend Upon My Heart

1 Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;

Draw it from earth; through all its pulses move;

Stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou are,

And make me love thee as I ought to love.

2 I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies,

No sudden rending of the veil of clay,

No angel visitant, no op’ning skies;

But take the dimness of my soul away.

3 Teach me to feel that thou art always nigh;

Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear,

To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh;

Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.

4 Teach me to love thee as thine angels love.

One holy passion filling all my frame;

The kindling of the heav’n descended dove,

My heart an altar, and thy love the flame.

Blessed be the Lord our God

By whose grace we are yet alive.

Blessed be His Son Jesus Christ

By whose rising we are set free.

Blessed be the Spirit of God

In whom is our hope and our joy.

Eternal God and Father, by whose power we are created and by whose love we are redeemed: Guide and strengthen us by your Spirit, that we may give ourselves to you in worship, praise and service. Help us to live this day in love for You and one another; through Jesus Christ our risen Lord.       Amen.

PSALM                                    51:1-2,  6-12

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love;

according to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,

and cleanse me from my sin.

6 You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom

in my secret heart.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;

wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness;

let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.

9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and put a new and right spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me away from your presence,

and do not take your holy spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,

and sustain in me a willing spirit.

GLORIA

A READING:               Romans 8:5-6, 14-17

5 …Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs: heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if we in fact suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

            The Word of the Lord.               Thanks be to GOD.

[…Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection…

The gift of God’s Holy Spirit is life and sanctification. We are supposed to be different after…  The psalmist worries about losing the presence of the Spirit he desires a new heart.  St Paul finds adoption as the end point of living in the Spirit. The Spirit affirms and maintains holiness and the freedom to pursue righteousness, in the life of the believer. A lot is on the table when we pray for the gift of the Spirit to be manifested in our lives.

…Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit….]

 THE PRAYERS:

The Lord be with you

And also with you.

                        As our Saviour has taught us, let us pray

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours now and for ever.      Amen.

V. Show us your mercy, O Lord;

R. And grant us your salvation.

V. Clothe your ministers with righteousness;

R. Let your people sing with joy.

V. Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;

R. For only in you can we live in safety.

V. Lord, keep this nation under your care;

R. And guide us in the way of justice and truth.

V. Let your way be known upon earth;

R. Your saving health among all nations.

V. Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;

R. Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.

V. Create in us clean hearts, O God;

R. And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

COLLECT                                Proper   9

O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.     Amen.

Almighty God, we thank you for the gift of your Holy Word. May it be a lantern to our feet, A light to our paths, and a strength to our lives.

Take us and use us to love and serve all persons in the power of the Holy Spirit and in the Name of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.       Amen.

            Spirit of the Living God, Fall fresh on me

            Spirit of the Living God, Fall fresh on me

            Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me

            Spirit of the Living God, Fall fresh on me

The Dismissal:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all now and for evermore.
