A MORNING DEVOTION

April  3, 2026

In this is love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.                                    I John 4: 10

CPWI   147       When I Survey…

1 When I survey the wondrous cross

on which the Prince of glory died,

my richest gain I count but loss,

and pour contempt on all my pride.

2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast

save in the death of Christ, my God!

All the vain things that charm me most,

I sacrifice them through his blood.

3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet,

sorrow and love flow mingled down.

Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,

or thorns compose so rich a crown?

4 Were the whole realm of nature mine,

that were a present far too small.

Love so amazing, so divine,

demands my soul, my life, my all.

Blessed be the Lord our God

By whose grace we are yet alive.

Blessed be His Son Jesus Christ

By whose rising we are set free.

Blessed be the Spirit of God

In whom is our hope and our joy.

O God our Father, you have bidden light to shine out of darkness,

and have awakened us again to praise your goodness and to seek

your grace; make us children of the light and of the day, that our

lives being open to your glory, we may shine as lights in the world,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Psalm 116:1, 10-17

1 I love the Lord, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him.

10 How shall I repay the Lord

for all the good things he has done for me?

11 I will lift up the cup of salvation  and call upon the Name of the Lord.

12 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.

13 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his servants.

14 O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant and the child

of your handmaid; you have freed me from my bonds.

15 I will offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving

and call upon the Name of the Lord.

16 I will fulfill my vows to the Lord  in the presence of all his people,

17 In the courts of the Lord’s house, in the midst of you, O Jerusalem.

GLORIA

             READING:                 1 Corinthians 10:15 – 22

15 I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ?

17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider the people of Israel;  are not those who eat the sacrifices partners in the altar? 19 What do I imply then? That food sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?

20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be partners with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. 22 Or are we provoking the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

The Word of the Lord.               Thanks be to GOD.

[…that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life;…

As we celebrate the institution of the Eucharist today, Maundy Thursday, The value of what was offered to us for our blessing and  transformation is fully captured by St Paul.  The power of what we share in the Eucharist is high-lighted and  the respect for what we receive is emphasized. Growing up in my grandparents home, their preparation for Communion on Sunday was not fully understood, but the value and the benefit they anticipated was conveyed. They had no intention of receiving the body of their Lord unworthily.

We can and should have that sense of awe (and fear) as we share in the mystery of our Lord’s self-giving.

We can and should have the highest hope of blessedness, as we feed at the Lord’s table on the medicine of immortality  ***

                                           THE PRAYERS:

The Lord be with you

And also with you.

As our Saviour has taught us, let us pray

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours now and for ever.  Amen.

V. Lord reveal your love among us

R. That we may know the joy of your salvation

V. Grant peace within and among all nations;

R. And teach our leaders wisdom

V. Endow your church with faithfulness

R. And her Servants with knowledge and true godliness

V. Defend, O Lord, the rights of the poor and the oppressed

R. That your justice may be known among all people.

V. Lord, renew your Spirit within us

R. That in us and through us your will be done

COLLECT                     THURSDAY  IN HOLY WEEK

Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Into your hands, Lord, we commend ourselves this day. Let your presence be with us to its close. Strengthen us to remember that in whatever good work we do we are serving you. Give us a diligent and watchful spirit, that we may seek in everything to know your will, and knowing it, may gladly perform it, to the honour and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.             Amen.

Follow, follow, I will follow Jesus,

            Anywhere, everywhere, I will follow on;

Follow, follow, I will follow Jesus,

Everywhere he leads me I will follow on.

The Dismissal:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellow-ship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all now and for evermore. Amen.                                                                       Corinthians 13:14

The Lord be with you

And also with you.

Let us bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God.
