EDITORIAL: Guyana needs to work on electoral reform

September 9, 2025

With all of the oil revenue rolling into Guyana, you would think that they would take a bit of that and upgrade the country’s electoral system. Their elections were held two days before that of Jamaica’s, and Jamaica had their results in less than 48 hours while Guyana was still counting up to 3 days after Jamaica’s election.

Not that the election was in any dispute, but the fact that they could not get it done across the country in a timely fashion is a bad look. Use some of that oil revenue money to buy new electronic systems if need be. We understand that Guyana has several far flung rural districts that need time and patience to ensure that all the votes are counted and people’s wills are reflected. So, we know they need to have a modern system that can capture the truth in a more efficient and timely way.

But, all in all, we see goodness for Guyana’s future. May the Lord’s blessings be with them.
