EDITORIAL: How is your country handling the COVID-19 fallout?

December 11, 2020

All we have been seeing is waves of funding from the international agencies like the Caribbean Development Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and the International Monetary Fund for COVID-19 fallout support. Hey, what’s $20-$30m between friends when there is a crisis putting the world in a chokehold?

The truth of the matter is hardly any of the relief aid goes to do what it is supposed to do, and the vague terms under which they are written ensures that the political leadership of the day makes it up as they go along just to appease the masses.

It is what it is, I assume. However, if there was ever one time where we needed something to go right and above board, when all the chips are down and people are dying in a crisis, it is now. From history, however, we expect the gnashing of teeth and the ghastly shrieks as “the people” find out that the money’s gone and no one knows what happened to the programme it was borrowed for. All the while, people die.

I guess that’s just it, no one knows much about this COVID-19 and when you know nothing, you do nothing. I don’t want to be dark and gloomy, but I have seen enough over the years to know that some of these multi-million dollar loans and aid packages will be totally wasted- and not a little bit wasted.

I just hope your government in your neck of the woods has a handle on things and saves lives the best way they can.
