St. Lucian Prime Minister Philip Pierre’s Labour Party (SLP) held its legislative majority on Monday, putting Pierre on course for re-election.
Official election results on Tuesday showed the social democratic SLP winning at least 13 seats in the small Caribbean island’s 17-seat House of Assembly, matching its current majority with two seats left to be called. The results showed Pierre with 57.1 percent of the popular vote against the conservative opposition leader Allen Chastanet’s 37.3 percent.
Chastanet preceded Pierre as prime minister of the country of 180,000 people. His conservative United Workers party (UWP), which held just two seats going into Monday’s vote, had secured one seat as of late Monday evening.
“There is a place in Parliament for the opposition, and we will move forward and work moving forward together,” Pierre said late Monday.
He is scheduled to be sworn in today and appoint a new Cabinet next week.
The island of some 168,000 people is heavily dependent on tourism. It has an 11 percent unemployment rate and a more than 20% poverty rate.
Public officers will be dismissed from work at noon on Friday, December 5, 2025, as the nation prepares for the official swearing-in of Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre to a second term.
The Office of the Prime Minister announced the half-day, describing it as a gesture that underscores the significance of the occasion and allows officers to observe and participate in the national event.
Essential services will remain in operation, with ministries and departments expected to make arrangements to ensure continued service where required.
The Prime Minister’s Office also encouraged private sector employers, where possible, to grant similar time off to staff.
