I never got the hype about Vybzkartel. It must be a generational thing. I respect him for his influence over other people and I am also happy that another black man is not behind bars anymore. But, his music is not that spectacular. To say that he is a role model that young people should aspire to is also a little bit of a stretch for an old head like me.
But, he is a lightning rod for controversy. His recent no-show at a Trinidadian concert that he was paid to perform, leaves many wondering what is all of the hype about a no-show? Especially since the Trinidadian authorities made it clear that they had misgivings about his supposed performance and had stipulations about which songs he was supposed to perform.
At the end of the day, it is all a bunch of nothing. While we don’t particularly clamour for his music, his stature as a prominent Jamaican DJ is accepted and we hope that both sides can work it out in the end of it.
