We take not of Caribbean Export Development Agency’s Executive Director, Dr Damie Sinanan and his opinion that regional integration is a challenge for the Caribbean. We submit it is more than just a challenge, but it is unworkable as long as we don’t have to trade with each other.
The reason we aren’t forced to trade with one another because we have the United States as the best next door neighbour you could ask for. We don’t have to go to Trinidad for anything when we can go to Florida and get the same thing for better quality and cheaper.
Everyone complains about having to travel to the US before going on to another Caribbean country unless you are flying Caribbean Airlines, but to be honest, many of us want the opportunity for the long layover so we can go into Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Atlanta and take in the city and do a little shopping. So, it doesn’t really matter.
So, maybe it may just have to be.
