EDITORIAL: The Caribbean may end 2025 in conflict

October 7, 2025

The events unfolding with the Trump administration blasting Venezuelan ships out of the water is unprecedented. Never before has the air strikes been so vague in terms of lack of evidence of the targets been.

For comparison, when the US went into Grenada, they knew they had to fight Marxist revolutionaries backed by Cuba. When it went into Panama, they knew they were up against a narco-terrorist of a leader in Manuel Noriega.

But this time, the US is not going after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, directly, Not after the military assets of Venezuela. But it is targeting civilian vessels that they suspect to be trafficking narcotics.

We are only left to believe the Trump administration that they are drug trafficking because the boats are being obliterated along with the evidence. This is very stark, indeed.

For all we know, they may just be regular fishing vessels or pleasure craft. I wish the US government would intercept one of these vessels and show us proof that it was a drug trafficking boat because the very direct moves are becoming very scary.

We have to ask now, who’s next? Colombian boats or Jamaica boats?

This may end up very unsightly for the Trump administration if they are innocent civilians on some of these boats.
