After months of peace between border nations Belize and Guatemala, there was a skirmish at the Sarstoon river border area. The information coming out of both sides are conflicting, but what is clear is that it is very disheartening.
We can attribute this to the vibes now encircling the region with regard to the tensions of US and Venezuelan military buildup. We need to remember the Caribbean and Central America are akin to the Swiss in that we are neutral, peaceful zones.
We already have Haiti that is violently unstable. We have Venezuela virtually collapsed and now Belize and Guatemala are deciding to invoke a years old border dispute that will serve neither of them any good.
We pray for peace in the region. There is no need for bloodshed between Belize and Guatemala.
