Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley has called an early election yet again in hopes of catching the opposition off-guard again. She has won two consecutive landslide victories in Barbados and if the opposition Democratic Labour Party are not careful, she may win a third consecutive landslide victory.
We have heard of no major upset or disruption in Barbados. The country is stable, albeit still in massive debt and in the International Monetary Fund’s hands. But, what do we expect from some of the Caribbean countries with massive public overspending and little tourism revenue relative to scale and no other economic prospect?
But, with all that being said, there is no rising star within the opposition DLP who can captivate the imagination of the people of Barbados. There is no one in the DLP or on the political landscape that Barbadians can care about.
Mottley most likely will win on star power alone. But will the DLP win at least a few seats remains the question here. We don’t like these overwhelming landslides, it’s bad for a country. The government needs opposition.
But, we hope Barbadians go to the polls safely at least.
