EDITORIAL: How can the Dragon field project continue in peace?

October 3, 2025

The news is that the US government gives its backing to the now controversial Dragon gas deal between Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. But this backing seems wrought with problems and this arrangement seems doomed to start. No investor can take the word of this backing from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for this deal. Here’s why.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has been a pariah in the region for the majority of his tenure as the head honcho in Venezuela. Just over the past few weeks, the Trump administration has been bombing suspected drug boats in Caribbean waters- killing at least 15 people in three separate air strikes on vessels. Not to mention there are sanctions on individuals in the Venezuelan government.

All of this has elicited the newly elected Bissessar administration in Trinidad to openly pledge their support for the strikes against Venezuelan vessels that are suspected drug trafficking boats.

So now, the Bissessar administration met with Rubio to get US backing on the Dragon deal with Venezuela, when the war of words between the Maduro regime and both the US and Trinidadian government has met a fever pitch? With now officials in Venezuela hurling insults and condemnation at Trinidad officials for backing the US strikes that are targeting Venezuelan vessels?

Why would any investor or anyone looking to take part in this Dragon deal be thrilled that the Bissessar government has gotten US backing, when they had played a part in poisoning what little relationship they had with the Maduro regime? Least of which, Bissessar, while in opposition, was luke warm about the previous Dr Rowley administration moving forward with the Dragon deal, if not all against the Rowley administration’s efforts on this?

Let us not forget US President Donald Trump in all of this. He can flip the switch in a minute and any agreement for backing by Rubio can be tossed out of the window. So where does that leave people?

Should have just left this Dragon deal die and do a new one at a time later down the road when all sides have calmed down and there is not so much vitriol and deaths in that part of the Caribbean. Just our five cents on the matter.
