We take not of Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s comments on the situation in Cuba. These are very interesting comments as the Caribbean typically stays out of Cuban affairs unless it is the obligatory chatter about the US embargo against the country.
We typically pay no mind to the Cuban plight let alone their style of government to any great extent. So, to hear a Caribbean leader speak about the tensions on the Spanish speaking island state gives us a moment to pause and ask why?
Whatever the reason is for the focus on the Cuban plight, we hope it helps the US to lift the embargo and decide to put the old Cold War wounds behind and work towards a safer region.
Frankly, it is only the Florida Cubans- particularly the Miami and Fort Lauderdale Cubans- who want the embargo to remain in place. And it is all because of their hatred of the old Castro regime and how he kicked out the oppressive Batista regime and its henchmen and appropriated their lands and properties.
But, that was over 50 years ago. Can we all just put that behind us. Truth is, you are never get those material things back and most likely because of the lives you have built in America, neither would you want to waste time trying to get that back when there is so much more ahead of you.
But, interesting Holness took time out to speak about Cuba. Not Haiti, not Venezuela, but Cuba.
