EDITORIAL: Barbados Opposition never stood a chance

February 13, 2026

Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley and her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) has won a landslide again in Barbados this past February 11. The opposition, Democratic Labour Party, led by Ralphe Thorne, stood no chance.

The DLP was simply caught off guard by the snap election call. They had less than two months to prepare.

Secondly, the DLP had major leadership issues as Thorne was unpronounced as a politician, much less a leader, despite being a high-profile defector from the governing BLP.

Thorne was seen as wish-washy, having been a DLP, turning to the BLP, then defecting from the BLP back to the DLP, ousting the DLP’s leader Dr Ronnie Yearwood. That within itself looked silly.

They looked as what they were. Dishevelled and unworthy to lead Barbados again. So, it is good luck to Ms Mottley for her third term. We wish Barbadians all the best.
