Grenadians will head to the polls for general elections on Nov. 5, 2026, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell announced Sunday.

Mitchell, who was serving as the prime minister of Grenada since 24 June 2022 and the leader of the National Democratic Congress since 2021, made the announcement in a national address, days after advising Governor-General Dame Cécile La Grenade to dissolve Parliament on Oct. 2. The writ for the election was issued the same day.

The upcoming election is not without controversy as a list of candidates was leaked to the press prior to Mitchell’s formal announcement.

According to Mitchell, the leak is now the subject of an investigation. There are reports that the leak came either from the Office of Governor General Dame Cecile La Grenade or the Government Printery, which is responsible for the publication of the Gazette.

Mitchell also addressed the issue after alighting from a helicopter on the Fond Playing field in St Patrick from the sister isle of Carriacou where he took part in a ceremony earlier in the day to officially launch Tevin Andrew as the Congress Candidate to contest the seat on the sister isle.

Asked about the origin of the leak, he said: “I have to find out what happened. The Writ for the Dissolution (of Parliament) was issued on Friday, the Writ for the Election was also issued on Friday … and both things have to be placed in the Gazette and then one Newspaper.

Nomination Day is set for Oct. 15, while police officers will have a special polling day on Nov. 2.

The Supervisor of Elections and the Parliamentary Elections Office are expected to provide additional information on polling stations, election guidelines and voting procedures in the coming weeks.

Mitchell, who has led the NDC since it defeated the New National Party (NNP) in the June 2022 general election, thanked voters for their support over the past four years.

The prime minister said the work of transforming the country was not yet complete and urged voters to take an active role in the election campaign.

“I encourage every eligible citizen to engage thoughtfully in the discussions ahead, ask critical questions, and exercise your fundamental right to vote,” he said.
