To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness; because we have rebelled against him and have not obeyed the Lord, by following his laws Daniel 9: 9-10

1 Praise the Lord! ye heav’ns, adore him;
Praise him angels, in the height;
Sun and moon, rejoice before him;
Praise him, all ye stars of light.
Praise the Lord! for he has spoken;
Worlds his mighty voice obeyed;
Laws which never shall be broken
For their guidance he has made.
2 Praise the Lord! for he is glorious;
Never shall his promise fail;
God has made his saints victorious;
Sin and death shall not prevail.
Praise the God of our salvation!
Hosts on high his pow’r proclaim;
Heav’n, and earth, and all creation,
Laud and magnify his name.
Hear us O Lord.
For your mercy is great.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit

O God our Father, you have bidden light to shine out of darkness,
and have awakened us again to praise your goodness and to seek
your grace; make us children of the light and of the day, that our
lives being open to your glory, we may shine as lights in the world,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Psalm 119:105-112
105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
106 I have sworn, and I will perform it,
that I will keep thy righteous judgments.
107 I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O Lord,
according unto thy word.
108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth,
O Lord, and teach me thy judgments.
109 My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law.
110 The wicked have laid a snare for me:
yet I erred not from thy precepts.

A READING: Jeremiah 7:21-26
21 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Add your burnt-offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. 22 For on the day that I brought your ancestors out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to them or command them concerning burnt-offerings and sacrifices. 23 But this command I gave them, ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people; and walk only in the way that I command you, so that it may be well with you.’ 24 Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but, in the stubbornness of their evil will, they walked in their own counsels, and looked backwards rather than forwards. 25 From the day that your ancestors came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day; 26 yet they did not listen to me, or pay attention, but they stiffened their necks. They did worse than their ancestors did.

There is a consistent message from the Old Testament prophets that the people of God keep forgetting. It is this: ‘To obey is better than sacrifice…’
God reminds Israel through Jeremiah, that he did not demand sacrifices but obedience, at the Exodus from Egypt. Today’s Church is busy ignoring Our Lord Jesus: ‘If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.’ It is a multi-generational, multi-testament witness to the fundamental requirement for divine citizenship; and we’re in danger of losing out…

THE PRAYERS:
The Lord be with you
And also with you.
V. Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance;
R. Govern and uphold them, now and always.
V. Day by day we bless you;
R. We praise your Name for ever.
V. Lord, keep us from all sin today;
R. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.
V. Lord, show us your love and mercy;
R. For we put our trust in you.
V. In you, Lord, is our hope;
R. And we shall never hope in vain.
COLLECT PROPER 19
O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
And now, as our Saviour has taught us, let us pray
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favor, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy Name, and finally, by your mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
