EDITORIAL:  No fireworks at 80th UN General Assembly

September 26, 2025

The 80th United Nations General Assembly has been pretty uneventful. In fact, there were no incidiary speeches that would have shocked us to our core.

US President Donald Trump was being himself- straight forward and forthright.

We hope that there were some useful meetings held in the background that can secure a peaceful end to the Russia and Ukrainian war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, called, again, for the world to condemn Vladmir Putin and Rusia’s aggression against them. This too is becoming as boring as the calls to help Haiti.

The only thing noteworthy is that Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas, said that the radical Islamic group Hammas will not play a part in the governance of Palestine any longer.

The October 7, 2023 attack on Israel has not worked out in Hammas and the Palestinian people’s favour. Let this be a note to any belligerent moving forward- peaceful means works better. They can take a word from peace advocates like Martin Luther King Juniro and Mahatma Ghandi, peace always wins.

Other than that, world leaders were on their usual droll. Climate change this and financing for developing nations that. Also, throwing jeers at US President Trump. Nothing new.
