EDITORIAL: We are free people. Praise the Lord!

August 1, 2025

Many of us in the Commonwealth Caribbean are celebrating Emancipation Day. For some, it falls on August 1 and celebrated that day. For others, it is celebrated on the following Monday, August 4. Whatever day, be grateful that we are not free black peoples.

We have come a long way as a region and as a people with a history of slavery. How cruel and brutal those slavery days must have been.

But yet, we are here as descendants and survivors of a brutal history of hatred and abuse. God has seen us through as a people and we can’t afford to look back. The future is ours. We must continue to free ourselves from the mental shackles of envy and jealousy among ourselves and lift up the brighter ones of us in strength.

For God is a good God and he sees and hears all of our problems and issues. We must continue to build one another and strengthen each other like we have no one else to depend on.

We must depend on ourselves. God is good.

Enjoy your Emancipation Day celebrations.
